Hi,
It has been a while since I posted, so I thought I'd give an update. Dizzy's, my weekly gig of two years, has come to an end. I'll miss my old spot, especially the duos with Tyler.
I have teamed up with my old friend pianist Alex Levin and his project known as "Sarah King and the Smoke Rings." This group swings! We have future dates which I'll try to get up on the site, and the website is
http://www.thesmokerings.com/.
Also, Nick Carver, who produces the podcast "No Idle Frets," has asked to include me in a future podcast. His podcasts, which can be found at
www.noidlefrets.com, showcase jazz guitarists. I was excited to be asked and will be on November 14th's show.
All the best, Chad.
A Coming Feature and New Radio Play
-
June 3, 2011
Ron Sweetman of CKCU FM 93.1 (Canada), an activist for jazz and blues, has hosted a weekly show called "In A Mellow Tone" since 1976. On June 15th, he will be featuring new jazz releases with an emphasis on guitarists and big bands.
My album,"Sympatico," will be featured along with others, such as Lou Volpe, Cheryl Bailey, Pierre Labbe, and Thad Jones.
I have been lucky to have been played on KSKA 91.1 in Anchorage, Alaska, WCVE 88.9 in Richmond, Virginia, and on other radio stations around the country. WJSU 88.5 in Jackson, Mississippi, recently purchased thirty "Symaptico" cds. Thanks for the support!
I have had some amazing and fun sessions with tenor saxophonist Tyler Sussman. We are hoping to bring our duo synchronicity into a quartet situation soon. All the best, Chad

I am very pleased to say that I have received support in the form of airplay from 88.3 FM WBGO in Newark, NJ, and KJZZ 91.5 FM in Phoenix. I must say that it is a strange and exciting experience to turn on the radio and hear yourself being played, especially knowing the number of people WBGO reaches. Thanks to those who have purchased the CD. Now, let's see some warmer weather.

Hi people,
I have been busy mailing letters and generally trying to promote the new record. This month, selections from the album were played on CBC, Canada's national radio. Katie Malloch played "West 53rd Street Blues" and featured my solo rendition of "Round Midnight," which she described as "gorgeous," on her program "Tonic."
Dizzy's in Park Slope, Brooklyn is still going strong for those who can make it out on Wednesday nights (7:30 - 9:30). To purchase "SYMPATICO", try CDbaby.com, iTunes.com, or Amazon.com.

Album Notes
-
December 5, 2010
My first album, "Sympatico," is currently at
www.OasisCd.com being designed and replicated. I am really hoping to have it out by Christmas, but there are no guarantees. Peter and I received an excellent set of liner notes from Bill Milkowski, which makes the anticipation of getting it out all that much greater. I just couldn't be happier with the sound achieved by Jim Anderson and Alan Silverman, who captured the natural sound of our archtops with impeccably warm precision. I am having the cds printed at 1X speed from a glass master for any other audiophiles. It won't be too long now.... Chad

I am happy to announce that the recording of the album is finished. Jim Anderson has done all of the recording at Avatar Studios, and hopefully we will mix it next week. After that, it will be off to be mastered. There will be eight duets with Peter Leitch and three solo tracks. I have spent the summer building strength in my left hand, and I have been able to return to the gauge of strings that I used to play. I have finally found medication that targets nerve pain and will cover the chronic pain in my left wrist. I am excited about what Peter and I have done and will try to get the album out asap. Happy 7th, Sarah! Bye, Chad

The recording dates with Peter are confirmed, so we will be in the studio soon. I will say that it has been hard for me to adjust to life with chronic pain. The surgeries went a long way towards helping me, but being a guitarist with this kind of injury is a constant battle. I am excited to record with Peter, and Sunday nights at Dizzy's are still going strong.
Tricks of the Trade

I am excited to announce that a duo jazz guitar recording with Peter Leitch is in the works. My left wrist still does not test as normal, so I am going for more occupational therapy. I have some fun dates coming up, and I would love to see everyone there. I'll be at Walker's on January 3rd, and there are two trio dates prior to that.

Some inspiring new projects have come my way. A special event on Oct. 8th is on the calendar page, so please check that out. I have been having a wonderful time at Dizzy's in Park Slope on Sunday nights and want to invite everyone out for a relaxed evening.
I have set my sights on producing on a new recording. It is all conceptual at this point, but I feel that it is high time to make a statement on the guitar. Sarah and I recently recorded three short songs which we have uploaded to our websites. We are very happy with them, so please take a minute to listen. Though I am dealing with residual wrist pain, I am excited about the possibilities ahead. Chad

My friend Tyler has motivated me by getting me out to play for the first time since the first surgery. Reese Muntean let me put up two great pictures from Gallery 151 on the Bowery. Sorry Reese, they were much sharper before this site reduced them.
I have been working to build up endurance in the length of time I can play and on strength in general. Sarah has helped me out a lot by singing with me, and we've had some really nice moments. We videotaped "Stella" and it sounded great. We decided we looked nuts, so it is not going up on the site. I have had some nice sessions with other players, as well.
I have taken Sunday nights at Dizzy's in Brooklyn for a while. I am excited about running through these standards again with a fresh perspective, especially in such a relaxed atmosphere. Hope to see you there- Chad

I'll Be Out Part Two
-
January 14, 2009
A second surgery is on the way. It is a FCU tendon repair. This has been impeding my progress in returning to playing. I'm hoping I'm not stuck with it. I'll be out two months this time.
I shot a recording session the other night and heard some great music in the process. Nice job, Alex! The pictures are intended for the CD booklet.
I'll have some new medium format shots up on my other site fairly soon. They are off being scanned. Cross your fingers. Chad
Happy New Year

January 4, 2009
I have started a new site to host my photography as I work on building strength in my left hand. Peter and I took a trip down to photograph the Mississippi Delta, and we came back with some great shots. It was an incredible experience. I have been able to spend more time on the guitar lately, but a second surgery is still a real possibility. My new site is
www.chadcoephotography.com. Mike, you will especially enjoy the slideshow feature.

The first thirteen images in my photo section will be on exhibit and for sale from November 15th through December 31st at Dizzy's Restaurant in Park Slope. I have been told the Giclee prints are stunning, but I have yet to pick them up. There will be four 24x36 and nine 16x20 prints.
I am considering a second surgery to try to counter the effects of a cortisone injection. It is an issue to date, but I remain hopeful.
Dizzy's Restaurant is located at the 7th Avenue F Train stop, which is at the intersection of 9th Street and 8th Avenue in Brooklyn. 511 9th St, Brooklyn 11215 Phone: 718-499-1966
September

August 30, 2008
Ok, so September is here. I'm just not ready to gig yet. Also, I will hold off on teaching lessons until I know how the next month or so goes. I have realized it is still possible to over do it, and I still have a way to go before I can make commitments.
Again, I want to say thanks to the kindred spirits from my past who have been emailing. I think a person can only dedicate their life to an instrument because they find intrinsic value in playing. If there are other rewards, so be it. It has been quite challenging to find something to replace the time I used to spend playing. I generally get what I am looking for in photography.
I have been selecting images for a photography exhibit at Dizzy's in Park Slope. It will start November 15th and run for a month. They feature a local artist every month. Peter and I made a trip to 125th street to shoot photos not too long ago. Check out his work through my link if you are unfamiliar with him. My negatives were botched in processing, but I will put up one that I salvaged on the photos page. We have discussed a trip down to Mississippi to photograph, so perhaps we could work that out. Chad

Could it be that they are ending? I am moving on. I heard you George Chuvalo.
Triumph!

June 26, 2008
It has been good to hear from many old friends recently. Jamie, I may test your soldering skills. I am beginning to play again but will withhold observations for later. Sarah and I just returned from Singer Island where we had a great time. Anyone up for fishing off of the pier at Coney Island?

For those reading this stuff, my cast is off. I'm headed in the right direction and can't wait to get my hands on the guitar again. I am conceptualizing an original album by bouncing ideas off of Sarah. I have spent a lot of time watching Muhammad Ali fights, listening to Chet Baker (who knew?), and doing occupational therapy exercises. Peter and I may go shoot some pictures in the city soon. Happy Birthday Sarah! Bye
It's Done.....

March 31, 2008
I'm back home after the surgery. I was told it went well. No guitar for three months....what else is there? It's time to read some books, pull out my camera, and write some music. Thanks to those who have emailed, sent cards, and called. Chad

Peter Leitch and I spent the afternoon with our archtops today. We had a great time and recorded some unrehearsed stuff. Check out the music section for the sounds...
I'll be out...

March 7, 2008
I'll be having surgery on March 31st to repair a torn ECU tendon and TFCC in my left wrist. I can't play for three months, and then I will have to start again gradually. This will supposedly end three years of constant pain. I'll try to record something before then for the website. Bye, Chad
